After being inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor, Apple CEO Tim Cook is pushing his home state to do more for equality and be inclusive where L.G.B.T. rights are concerned. Noting that Alabama was "too slow" to guarantee equality rights in the 1960s, the Apple CEO said that Alabama only removed a ban on interracial marriage in the state Constitution 14 years ago, and that it could be more progressive when it comes to the rights of people based on gender identity and sexual orientation today.
Cook said of Alabama's LGBT views:
And [Alabama is] still too slow on equality for the L.G.B.T. community. Under the law, citizens of Alabama can still be fired based on their sexual orientation. We can't change the past, but we can learn from it and create a different future.
Apple has been stepping up its efforts in terms of bringing more diversity to the workplace, being inclusive, and supporting the rights of minorities, including the L.G.B.T. community.
