DoubleTwist update brings WiFi syncing with paid 'AirSync' add-on

DoubleTwist update brings WiFi syncing with paid 'AirSync' add-on

 DoubleTwist

DoubleTwist has just been updated with the long-promised and highly-anticipated wifi syncing feature, which has been dubbed "AirSync." Unlike the player itself, which is free, AirSync is an add-on that will run you $4.99 (or 99 cents for the first 10,000 users), you will see a link to purchase it when you start up the updated DoubleTwist Android player. In addition to the phone app, users will need to make sure to update their desktop client, which is available for the Mac and PC.

If you jump on the DoubleTwist wagon, make sure you visit the Android Central Forums to discuss the new update. If you haven't used the program (or any syncing app), check out our handy guide to syncing music onto your Android phone. [DoubleTwist]

Chromey Calculator combines the power of Wolfram Alpha and Google Calculator

Chromey Calculator combines the power of Wolfram Alpha and Google Calculator
chromeycalculator

Take the awesome power of Wolfram Alpha; add the convenience and intelligence of Google's built-in calculator. Now mix them up and serve in a piping hot Chrome add-on: Chromey Calculator.

When you click the extension's humble button, it opens a quick prompt pane (you can also pop it out to its own separate Chrome window). You can then feed it with any expression Wolfram Alpha or Google Calculator understands, and even mix those expressions up.

Chromey Calculator decides whether to use Google or Wolfram Alpha. You can see what engine it used for your calculation by hovering over a result; clicking the logo takes you to the source page (handy mostly for Wolfram Alpha calculations, which usually yield interesting graphs).

The add-on even supports variables. One proposed example goes like this:

@Everest = height of Everest
@K2 = height of K2
@Everest - @K2 in meters

So this basically takes the height of Everest and of K2 (the world's second-highest mountain) and calculates the difference - all within your Chrome window, without opening any other sites or tabs.

This is very powerful stuff; the only limit is your imagination - I would love to hear any interesting examples in the comments.

Playboy Goes Non Nude For iPad

Soon the official Playboy iPad App will be revealed but certain other elements won’t be. What we’re trying to say is that in order to follow Apple’s very strict anti-obscenity rules Playboy has agreed to keep their app for the iPad tablet device entirely non-nude and tasteful. With no nudity allowed Playboy may just have [...]

Content ratings now live in the Android Market developers' console

Content ratings now live in the Android Market developers' console

Android Market content rating

The Android Market's new content rating system is now live in the developer's console. From here on out, any new or updated applications will be required to choose from Mature, Teen, Pre-Teen and All. While ratings ultimately are the responsibility of the developers, Google has given a set of guidelines that must be followed.

Apps that include references to Alcohol, Tobacco and Drugs, as well as violence (cartoon, fantasy or otherwise) shall be labeled "Mature." Same goes for sexual or suggestive content. Porn still isn't allowed.

A app that includes inflammatory content, profanity and crude humor,  that may offend users should be rated "Teen" or "Mature."

Here's where it gets a little interesting: Apps that ask users for their location at any point must not be rated "All." Apps that "ask to access course or fine location data" are "Pre-Teen." Any app that can publish your location should be rated "Teen" or "Mature."

Users will be able to flag apps that they believe are incorrectly rated, and Google will take a look. Repeat offenders can be "subject to further action," says Google, up to and including killing the dev account.

We're not seeing ratings on apps in the Market just yet, but you know they're coming.

Reachin'Pichin is a hopping, kawaii Time Waster

Reachin'Pichin is a hopping, kawaii Time Waster
reachinpichin

In Reachin'Pichin, you take the role of a genetically engineered creature whose manufacturing process went awry. While that sounds quite ominous, it's really not: you were supposed to be able to fly, but instead, you can merely hop.

Your goal in life (or in the game, at least) is to reach as high into the sky as possible, by leaping from platform to platform. At the beginning of the level you are launched from your lair beneath the surface of the planet. Once you emerge into the beautiful, pastoral air, you only need to move right and left to land on the randomly-placed platforms.

Once you land on a platform, it instantly catapults you upwards. It also vanishes, so you can't land on it again: your only hope is rising high enough, and accurately enough, to reach another platform.

It's not a very easy game, but it's super cute. The character is lovable, and the soundtrack is simply addictive. Loads of fun!

Microsoft Word XML patent case to be heard by Supreme Court

Microsoft Word XML patent case to be heard by Supreme Court
Microsoft struck out on two previous attempts in court, but it's not prepared to give up on Word just yet. Today, the Redmond company received a bit of welcome news: the Supreme Court has agreed to hear Microsoft's appeal in the case to decide who owns the patent for XML, the markup language that powers Word. That takes Microsoft off the hook for the $290 million in damages previously awarded to plaintiff i4i, and allows it to keep selling Word for now.

For the time being, then, it's business as usual for Microsoft. That's good news for all of us -- considering the Office Armageddon they warned us about back in 2009 when things were just getting started. As the Register points out, the tech world will be waiting with bated breath to hear the Court's decision -- if i4i's patent on XML is upheld, it could have major implications for future patent-related trials.

Video Walkthrough Of Virgin?s New Project iPad Magazine

Virgin's somewhat highly-anticipated Project iPad magazine went live early this morning. Its focus is on "design, entertainment, technology, entrepreneurs" and its format is kin to other attempts at next-generation magazines, though I'd say this one is more successful. Of course, it requires an iPad with 4.2 to enjoy, and while five or six million of those have been sold, not everybody will get a chance to check this thing out. So I put together a little video walkthrough for you guys.

GooReader updates to version 2.0, now a sexier way to read Google Books

gooreader google books
We showed you GooReader back in August, and it was already a very slick way to read Google Books titles on your Windows desktop. It's now been updated to version 2.0, and GooReader is looking good and more functional than ever before. In addition to getting a bit of a facelift, GooReader 2.0 lets you highlight blocks of text or draw little notes on a page. There's no text tool this time around, but don't be surprised to see that functionality in a future build.

GooReader will pick up where you leave off when you close an e-book, but bookmarking specific pages isn't supported. Exporting to PDF is still limited to the paid version -- Google Book Downloader offers the functionality for free, if you'd rather download now and read later.

Verizon announcing LTE details Dec. 1

Verizon announcing LTE details Dec. 1

Verizon LTE

Verizon's having a little shindig tomorrow, Dec. 1, to provide details on its LTE rollout. As a refresher, Big Red's 4G service initially will be available in 38 cities and more than five dozen airports nationwide. What we're not expecting, however, is the announcement of any LTE-capable phones, like the rumored HTC Incredible HD/Mecha. Instead, we'll start with some LTE USB modems and work from there. We'll still kibitz on the presser and keep our fingers crossed, though. [Verizon]

How to hotpot

We've talked about Google's hotpot before, it's the new feature from Google Maps and places for Android.  And, to be honest, it's pretty cool having ratings from people you know and trust built right in to the Maps app.  Now Google Product Manager Mat Balez has a short video explaining how using hotpot can help you find the places you love, as well as find new places to love.  Give it a look, after the break.
