Verizon's letter to HTC Droid Incredible buyers offers apology, $25 gift card

Verizon's letter to HTC Droid Incredible buyers offers apology, $25 gift card

htc droid incredible

According to a tipster, Verizon is sending out letters to everyone waiting for their HTC Droid Incredible, apologizing for an extra seven-day delay for those who ordered on or before June 28.  The letter goes on to say they will be sending out $25.00 gift cards to all who had to wait as a way to express their thanks for your continued patience.

While it doesn't make the time go by any faster, a few bucks and more importantly the fact that they address and apologize for the issue goes a long way.  I'm sure Verizon wants an Incredible in your hand almost as much as you do.  Follow the link to see the text in it's entirety. Thanks Andrea!

Picasa Web integration takes shape in Chrome OS

Picasa Web integration takes shape in Chrome OS

You already know Chrome OS is a "cloud operating system," but until recently it really hasn't shown much in terms of integration with Web apps. Not in the open source Chromium Code at least -- Google's dogfood Chrome OS is likely a bit further along. However, while tinkering with Chromium OS on my netbook today (you know, the one I've been using for posting video demos) I happened upon an interesting change to the file browser.

There's always been a small dropdown icon to the right of filenames -- in all honesty the only option I recall being there before was to delete the file. That menu has now been expanded from its original form to now include options for uploading to your Picasa Web albums, Flickr account, or to send via email (though only the Picasa option is active at this time).

Uploading images to Picasa Web will put them in the Drop Box folder, which is unlisted by default.

Other files don't have the updated context menu yet, but don't be surprised if uploading office files to Google Docs and videos to YouTube become options in the very near future. I'll be sharing more screenshots when they do.

Xperia X10 gets an update, still waiting on Android 2.1

Xperia X10 gets an update, still waiting on Android 2.1

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

The good news: An update is rolling out the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 as we speak. The bad news: Nope, it's still stuck on Android 1.6. Here's what you are getting, though:

This update focuses on improving the general performance, speed and responsiveness of Xperia X10. For example, there are speed improvements in messaging tasks and camera UI. In addition we add a free back up and restore application so you’ll never lose your settings and information. In selected markets, PlayNow™ with premium apps and games will also be added.

Better than nothing, we guess. But as we talk more and more about devices starting to get Froyo, the wait for Eclair becomes that much harder to stomach. [Sony Ericsson Product Blog]

False positive by Norton forces some Firefox users to reinstall after 3.6.6 update

False positive by Norton forces some Firefox users to reinstall after 3.6.6 update

Filed under: Security, Mozilla, Symantec, Browsers

False positives aren't all that uncommon -- with so many different antivirus and antimalware products out there, so many threats, and so much untested software, it's to be expected that detection mishaps are going to happen. Mishaps like that little McAfee situation earlier this year...

Today's offender is Symantec, whose Antivirus and Internet Security products decided to push the panic button on a trio of files delivered to Firefox users who recently updated to version 3.6.6. The problem was reported to Symantec and has been fixed in new virus definitions, and the problem appears to have arisen because of the cloud analysis features in a newer version of the Norton products.

If the detection happened to nuke your Firefox install, just force a definition update and then reinstall your browser.

The H notes that even a simple 'hello world' script can set things off if it hasn't been detected previously. Call me crazy, but that seems like a bit of a problem...

Review: BodyGuardz Protective Skin for Sprint HTC Evo 4G

Review: BodyGuardz Protective Skin for Sprint HTC Evo 4G

bodyguardz skin for the HTC Evo 4G

The Bodyguardz Protective Skin for your Sprint Evo 4G's 4.3 inches of glass definitely brings the protection.  Many of us (myself included) do not like a case interfering with the pocketability of our phones, especially when it's as big as the HTC Evo, so a full skin is the answer.

Made from the same material used to shield the front of automobiles from stones, the Bodyguardz skin is tough and durable, and will keep your Evo 4G free from scratches.  Cut to fit the Evo, it provides screen and full body protection without adding in bulk, and best of all there is no case to grab all that pocket lint or interfere with docks or chargers.

It's also a pretty easy install, and comes with all the materials needed for two applications on your HTC Evo 4G.

Take a look after the break to see a video of the installation process, as well as a few pictures showing off the finished product.

Microsoft goes for six of a kind, prepares new Office 2010 for small biz

Microsoft goes for six of a kind, prepares new Office 2010 for small biz

Straight out of the "you can never have enough SKUs" files, Microsoft appears to be prepping a new flavor of Office 2010 for release next month.

Dubbed Office Small Business Basics 2010, the package will include Word, Excel, OneNote, and Outlook. Make that probably includes, because there's not a whole lot of information about SBB on the Web apart from recent speculation that it's about to be released. There's a one-line nod to it on this Microsoft page, where you'll see it crammed in amongst all the other Office 2010 bits.

In fairness to Microsoft, the additional SKU actually does make sense. With so many different purchase options available for Office 2010 -- like those looks-like-a-prepaid-phone-card-but-isn't activation cards -- why not offer as many different combinations of the core Office apps as they think consumers may want? It's also pretty clear that the goal with Office 2010 is to get everyone using it -- whether they pay for it or not (Starter, Office Web... ).

In all honesty, the inclusion of PowerPoint in the small business versions was kind of a mystery to me -- though maybe that's because most of the customers I support during the day have a hard enough time staying on top of Word and Excel, let alone mastering a presentation app.

Buzz was just for starters -- here comes Google Me (look out Facebook, lock up your daughters, etc.)

Buzz was just for starters -- here comes Google Me (look out Facebook, lock up your daughters, etc.)

Filed under: Internet, Google, Social Software

If you follow the rumor mill, you probably heard about Google Me a few days ago. Digg's founder Kevin Rose tweeted about it a couple of days ago. It's not that people didn't believe him, but it just seemed a bit random to come from someone like him. Now, thanks to the added confirmation of early Facebooker and Quora cofounder Adam D'Angelo, it seems like Google Me is all but confirmed.

It's just a series of bullet points, which Adam D'Angelo says he's 'pieced together from reliable sources'. Still, they make for fantastic reading: [the following is copied and pasted!]
  • This is not a rumor. This is a real project. There are a large number of people working on it. I am completely confident about this.
  • They realized that Buzz wasn't enough and that they need to build out a full, first-class social network. They are modeling it off of Facebook.
  • Unlike previous attempts (before Buzz at least), this is a high-priority project within Google.
  • They had assumed that Facebook's growth would slow as it grew, and that Facebook wouldn't be able to have too much leverage over them, but then it just didn't stop, and now they are really scared.
You can certainly see Google's point of view. With Facebook's 'social graph search' and continuous meteoric growth, Google is likely experiencing 'fear' and 'worry' for the first time in its corporate life. Google has never been sharp on social aspects of the Web, so I'm curious as to whether Google Me will be a Facebook clone, or something altogether more adventurous.

Does anyone else think that Google looks more and more like a lumbering giant that simply throws fistfuls of resources and money at its problems? A bit like Microsoft...?

(And what on earth happened to the Google-owned Orkut...?!)

T-Mobile Vibrant hands-on

T-Mobile Vibrant hands-on

T-Mobile Vibrant

T-Mobile's version of the Samsung Galaxy S is known as the Vibrant, and it's as slim and sleek as its cousins. Same 1GHz Hummingbird processor, same 4-inch Super AMOLED display. T-Mo just had to show us how Avatar looks on the phone, and while it's not quite the same as in the theater, it's still pretty damn good for a 4-inch smartphone. Check it out after the break.
