FlyRuby Aims to Be the Kayak of Private Air Travel

Launching today at the Demo Conference in Palm Springs is flyRuby, a platform that enables you to search, compare, and book private air charters online. There is something to be said for startups that identify successful services and business models and apply those to under-served niche markets. Through its website, flyRuby hopes to deliver a quick and efficient way to book private air charter that is comparable to the instantaneous search, booking, and competitive pricing of commercial airline sites, like Orbitz, Kayak and Expedia. The project of founder and CEO Michael Leek, flyRuby owes its technology to CTO Dr. Stephen Smith, who, working in conjunction with Carnegie Mellon University, developed the algorithms as part of a DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) research initiative to assist the U.S. Air Force. Operating in a similar manner to the technology behind commercial airline booking sites, flyRuby's artificial intelligence instantly scans thousands of flight routes and seating charts for private flights across the country, finding available seating, and streamlining the booking process.

The Samsung Gem lives! Dummy units heading to Verizon stores

The Samsung Gem lives! Dummy units heading to Verizon stores

Samsung Gem for Verizon

We broke the good/bad/indifferent news earlier today in our rumored devices forum -- the Samsung Gem has been resurrected, and dummy units are hitting Verizon stores as we speak. The Gem is a pretty basic 3.2-inch Android smartphone with a 3.2MP camera and an 800MHz processor. Not all that much to write home about, but it did see release on Alltel just a few weeks ago.

So, yeah, dummy units are arriving. We've got one more pic after the break, and that's probably as close as we're going to get to this thing. Thanks to you know who!

Groupon launches Gaopeng.com coupon site in China

Groupon launches Gaopeng.com coupon site in China
With a population of more than 1.3 billion people, getting your app launched inside China's borders could be a very good thing for business. That's what Groupon thinks, too, and its new China spin-off Gaopeng.com aims to bring local deals to connected Chinese users.

Estimates peg the number of Internet users in China at around half a billion. Groupon will be fighting for market share with other group buying services, and it has apparently partenered with Tencent -- which develops China's most popular instant messaging app QQ -- to get Gaopeng off and running.

Competitors aren't totally thrilled with Groupon's arrival, and not just because there's another deal site in China. Groupon has been accused of poaching staff -- and competitors have firmly stated that employees who leave for Grouon will not be welcomed back.

Cueboy Quest is an adorable 8-bit style physics game

cueboyquest
Yes, that's right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren't always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight - the have arcing trajectories, so you don't always hit exactly where you aim.

There's another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Each level is very short, and most of them are quite easy. And not only are the graphics 8-bit blocky, but they're large too. Simply beautiful!

Get One Year of Free Gmail Backups to Backupify [Deals]

A small set of Gmail's users found all their Gmail stuff vanished over the weekend. Online backup service Backupify (previously mentioned) is taking the opportunity to entice new users with a coupon code (savegmail) for a year of free backup with one of their premium plans, which, of course, includes Gmail. For some of us, Backupify seems like a worth-paying-for service, and definitely a viable option for those not up for command-line-based or IMAP backup maneuvers. See details on the Backupify blog. GoToMyPC app for iPad lets you access remote computers on-the-go

GoToMyPC app for iPad lets you access remote computers on-the-go
Popular remote computing tool GoToMyPC has launched an iPad app, joining competitors like TeamViewer HD in the App Store. You'll need the host program installed on any computers you wish to access, and an account is also required (but GoToMyPC does offer a free a 30-day trial).

Fire up the app on your iPad, and you're presented with a list of computers you've previously enabled for remote access. Connections via Wi-Fi and 3G are both supported, and all communication is 128-bit AES encrypted. GoToMyPC also features touch and gesture controls, which, of course, you'd expect from an iPad app.

Check out the video after the break to see the iPad-friendly GoToMyPC app in action!

Samsung asks: What's your Tab life?; next 'Unpacked' event at CTIA

Samsung asks: What's your Tab life?; next 'Unpacked' event at CTIA

Samsung Mobile Unpacked CTIA

The spring CTIA event is just a few short weeks away, and Samsung Mobile's starting to tease its next "Unpacked" event. The event at MWC in early February was dubbed "Letters From the World," and up next we have "What's your Tab life?" with the number(s) 78910 underneath.

We're betting that has something to do with the perfect tablet size. Sammy's already got the original 7-inch Galaxy Tab, of course, and it unveiled a 10-inch Honeycomb version in Barcelona. Will we get 8- and 9-inch versions to go along with them? We'd probably bet against that, but stranger things have happened. (Update: Yeah, an 8.9-inch tablet could well be it.) Find out March 22, we guess. [Facebook]

AdvanceTC's 4.8-inch tabletphone runs Windows 7 on a 1.6GHz Atom CPU

It may not sound like the most practical combination, but we've got to hand it to AdvanceTC -- it's shoehorned telephony into a Windows 7 tablet, fulfilling our dark desire for a spiritual successor to the xpPhone. Yes, that's not Windows Phone 7 you're looking at above, but rather full desktop Windows running on a sizable quad-band GSM brick, whose insides hold a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD, a 4.8-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, a 1.3 megapixel webcam and a chunky 3200mAh battery to power the whole thing. Calls are handled via AdvanceTC's custom UI layer and there's some software trickery to keep that battery in check, as the device can automatically wake from sleep when it detects an incoming call or text message. We doubt we'd much enjoy navigating Windows 7 on a screen that small, but AdvanceTC also gives the Atrix a nod, claiming that the device can act like a full nettop PC when connected to an HDMI dock. We'll let you know if the company gives us a price, release date, or any indication that it will actually hit retail at all.

Keydex: The Ugliest iPad ?Keyboard? Ever?

The only part of the Sanwa Keydex iPad stand that won’t melt your eyes due to its sheer ugliness is the keyboard — and that’s because it doesn’t come with one. Instead, you have to supply your own iPad Keyboard Dock. And that’s where the pointlessness of this accessory starts to become clear. To fully [...]

How to back up Gmail to Hotmail or a desktop email program

How to back up Gmail to Hotmail or a desktop email program
gmail backup
When the news first broke of Gmail losing a small chuck of its users' inboxes, I had a rather terrifying realization: For nearly 8 years, I've been using Gmail as my only message store -- putting all my eggs in one basket, so to speak. If you use Gmail, you're probably now thinking the same thing as me: I really should have a backup.

But where should I back up to? There are two choices: use a regular desktop email program, like Outlook or Thunderbird, or use an alternate webmail provider like Hotmail.
